Activity: The Case of the Dirty Fridge

Do you like mysteries? Are you a fan of CSI? Ever dream of solving your own case?
Become a Forensic Scientist and solve the The Case of the Dirty Refrigerator.
Decipher which meal gave Mary and Jake Salmonella poisoning, which food carried the contamination, and what Salmonella strain is responsible for their illness.
For teachers, this is a good introduction to forensic genomics, can be used in grade 9 and upwards.

Activity Thursday: Be a Genetic Counsellor

Be a genetic counsellor – these case studies are simulated ‘real-world’ health scenarios that a genetic counsellor might encounter in practice. Many of the case studies involve problems based on Mendelian genetics principles.

This activity is best suited for Grades 10-12, though modifications may be made to accommodate students of different levels & abilities.

Activity Thursday: Candy DNA

Make a DNA double helix, using marshmallows or fruit and licorice. Not only is it a great model to understand DNA & how it works, but tastes great too! (And healthy…if you use fruit!)
Good introduction for DNA and works well with scientists of all ages, and especially with younger scientists (below grade 9)
